Chapter Seven

Tea time was going to be the death of Amy Clarke. She was certain of it.

For the third time in five days, she was a captive in an overly decorated, under ventilated drawing room that was over capacity with boring stiffs.

What was worse was now that the Morgan family had made their triumphant return, they were at nearly every social function as Amy and Robert.

It was entirely miserable and the only thing that made it worse was to watch what seemed like a growing affection blossoming between Timothy de la Fontaine and Laura Morgan.

It made Amy nauseous to watch Laura coo and patter to the duke with sugary nonsense and words that were no deeper than the puddles between the cobblestones in the road outside. She was a simpering, flattering fool and more than once Amy forced herself not to roll her eyes.

“Oh, Timothy,” she cooed over cucumber sandwiches. “Your stories are simply the most exciting words to ever be spoken.”

Ugh. Amy couldn’t help the face she made into her cup of tea.

Timothy had good stories, it was certain. Amy enjoyed his stories. But this one was boring to say the lease. The story was that when he was young, one of his horses threw a shoe while he was riding it.

Seriously, Amy grimaced. Who had never dealt with that in their life?

If only the twit knew just how thoughtful and intelligent the duke really was, her pretty little head might simply explode on the spot.

Amy stifled a giggle by stuffing a ginger cookie in her mouth.

Beside her, Uncle Rupert hadn’t missed it.

“You must share whatever has made you laugh,” he whispered. “For I fear I am going to fall asleep where I sit. This is positively numbing.”

“It’s really nothing,” she replied honestly. “Just an amusing thought that passed through my mind. Anything to keep me from having to participate in this lame conversation.”

Rupert gave a knowing nod and Amy quickly changed the subject.
